Latham Takes Up PEFC UK Chairmanship

Peter Latham has today been appointed PEFC UK Ltd [1] Chairman following the Annual General Meeting on 3rd July.

Latham is Chairman of James Latham PLC, one of Britain’s oldest timber companies. He also chairs the Forests Forever Board; serves on the Governing Board of the Timber Trade Federation and is a member of the Council of the Commonwealth Forestry Association.

Latham succeeds Martin Gale CBE who resigned as Chairman following his recent decision to leave UPM Kymmene after sixteen years to start his own forestry and consulting business.

Commending the progress PEFC UK Ltd has enjoyed under Gale’s chairmanship, Latham commented:

"The company has experienced unprecedented growth in a number of areas over the past year, including rising membership and a huge increase in demand for PEFC chain of custody certification in the UK. This has been a very good year for PEFC UK and I am committed to building on these successes, while promoting the unique value that credibly certified wood delivers".

PEFC is the world’s largest international forest certification scheme, endorsing national forest certification schemes in 22 countries on four continents. With 196 million hectares under certification, the PEFC endorsement programme has greatly increased the availability of certified raw material to companies committed to the responsible sourcing of raw materials

Editors’ Note

[1] PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes)

PEFC is a framework for the mutual recognition of credible national or regional forest certification schemes that have been developed based on internationally recognised requirements for sustainable forest management. Since its launch in 1999, PEFC has become the largest forest certification programme covering national schemes from all over the world, delivering hundreds of millions of tonnes of wood to the processing industry and then on to the market place from over 196 million hectares of certified forests.
