Make Wood Work - An Industry Under Threat
Make Wood Work is a national initiative aimed not just at securing the long-term future for wood panel manufacturing in the UK - but a fight for the very survival of an industry under threat. Demand for timber products across Europe has increased considerably, largely based on new power stations using timber for Biomass fuels. This will lead to increased timber costs and could lead to actual timber shortages and factory closure in the MDF, Particleboard and OSB sectors. Prices for these products will inevitably increase throughout 2001 and we will see extended lead times and potentially product shortages. EDM's are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few are actually debated. EDM's allow MP's to draw attention to an event or cause. MP's register their support by signing individual motions. The more signatures, the more chance the EDM will be debated in the main chamber. Here you can read the actual motion http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2010-11/1788. The EDM highlights the strengths of the wood panel industry, the danger posed to it by large scale biomass and calls on the Government to rethink the way it supports biomass energy. The EDM is already attracting cross-party support and further details can be viewed on the above website.
